Great Spotted Woodpecker Chicks
I found a number of Great Spotted Woodpecker nests over the Spring. I say found. With the chicks constantly calling out to their parents when they are out finding food, you don't exactly need a certificate in advanced field craft to locate them.
You do, however, have to be more aware when photographing them, as their parents are on high alert. Even if you can't see them they have probably already clocked you and if they see you getting too close to the nest hole they'll hold back and won't return until they think it's safe again. Obviously you want to avoid this at all costs as you don't want to disrupt or delay food getting to the chicks.
The following photos and video are from a couple of the nests where I was able to keep a respectful distance or hidden away to watch a few visits from the adults.
