Northern Lights over Middlewick Ranges

After missing the Aurora Borealis light show earlier in the year, I was glad to get another opportunity to see and photograph them.

After a few false alarms over recent weeks, I initially dismissed this as another no-show, after looking out of the window in the evening and seeing nothing.

Later on I glanced out again and this time there was a definite pinky hue to the sky so I quickly grabbed my camera and tripod and headed out. In my rush I completely forgot to take a torch so had to rely on my phone to not only see where I was walking but to illuminate any foreground in my shots. Not ideal but it was a pretty hastily made decision to go out so it wasn’t like I had any plans that required a better light source. An improvised bodge was the order of the evening.

Middlewick Ranges was the perfect spot to take some photos given that it was only a few minutes up the road and I had no idea how long the Northern Lights would be visible for.

It was great to be able to capture a few images of this fantastic wildlife spot, in a way I had never seen it before. The flag pole at the top of the hill was ideally positioned for the vivid splash of pink and I was able to capture some of the green in my two wider landscape shots. Fingers crossed I might get some more opportunities if the high activity continues.
